Killester Take A Bite Out Of Tigers

26th November 2006

First Quarter

The game started extremely defensively with Kellester getting the first score on the board and then the next score coming over 1 minute later coming after an impressive shot from James Mooney making it 2-2. Then Killester dominated the scoring for the next 4 minutes with baskets from O’Moore, Westbrooke and Anderson. Tigers seemed to lack the leadership that point guard Dave Fanning brought to the team who was sorely missed due to an ear infection. Finally tigers got a basket from 2 points from Wilder who also drew the foul and sunk his free throw and then a 3 pointer from James Mooney brought them back into the game. However Killester answered that with four points from Westbrooke and Anderson . The game was neck and neck coming towards the end with baskets from Tigers coming from Roscoe Patterson and then a basket coming from Kieran Donnaghy plus 1 of 2 free throws which was matched with baskets from Heinz and Westbrookes from Killester and a 39 second basket from Anderson finishing the quarter at 15-17 to Killester.

Second Quarter

The 2nd quarter started with Killester hitting hard again with 4 points from Walls, 2 points from 6 and a big 3 pointer from Goj. Even a big dunk from Wilder could not stop them as Walls answered in kind with 2 points of his own. Hinz then went to the basket and were fouled as he scored 2 and hit his free throw which was answered almost identically over a minute later with 2 points and a free throw of his own. Then Mooney was fouled and stuck 2 for 2, followed by 2 from Kieran Donnaghy putting the score at 28-29 with 3:29 on the clock. A 3 pointer from Hinz was the last score Killester got for another 1 minute with Tigers scoring an amazing 3 pointer from Mooney right in his markers face and a 2 pointer from Wilder which drew the foul and the bonus point put the score to34-32. A basket from Michael Quirke who arrived late and was sorely missed in the first quarter was the last basket Tigers could get in the game with baskets coming from Hinz and Walls for Killester finished the half at 36-36.

Third Quarter

The second half started with both teams going basket for basket with Killester scoring 4 points from Hinz and 2 points from Walls and Tigers with 2 points each from Quirke and Teahan and then 2 free throws from Michael Quirke putting the score at 42-42 with 8:57 on the clock. A 2 pointer from Kelly and a big 3 pointer from Walls was all Killester could muster for another four minutes however Tigers failed to capitalize due to poor turnovers and sloppy play only giving them scores from Wilder putting the score to 46-47 at 2:50, Wilders inability to hit both his free throws hitting only two of four beginning to cost Tigers. A 2 pointer from Westbrooks and a 3 pointer from Walls wrapped up the scoring for Killester in the quarter with Tigers only getting 2 from Mooney finishing the 3rd quarter 48-52.

Fourth Quarter

The final quarter started with two points from Walls and a 3 by Goj which was answered by Wilder going to the free throw spot and again scoring only 1 of 2 free throws and was topped off by an excellent 3 pointer by Mooney putting the score to 52 57 with 9:18 on the clock. Another 3 pointer from 34 was all that Killester had for another 3 minutes which saw Tigers get another 1 from the free throw spot which was answered by a 2 pointer from O’Moore. Then on 7:15 Mooney hid another amazing steal and break getting him a well deserved basket to put the score 53-60. However this was answered by a steal of his own by Westbrookes getting 2 back. Tigers then rallied to get another 5 points however this was dampened but the loss of Kieran Donnaghy who just the night before won an all-star for being the Gaelic player of the year. Killester then punished Tigers with a 3 pointer from Goj. Tigers sadly only scored once more from an Auguste 3 pointer when they succumbed to foul trouble giving Killester baskets from the free throw line causing the game to end in an anti-climax with a score of 65-76.

Post Match Comments

David Falvey: We were lacking the control that Dave Fanning gave to the point guard position and it showed in the later stages of the game. We look forward to having him back fit and well for the next home game next weekend against Neptune where we hope to pick up points and regain our position from them on the top of the table. Hopefully with the great support we saw from the huge turnout of tonight’s crowd coupled with the superb play we saw from players like Kieran Donnaghy who showed incredible heart both in defence and offence we can over-come them and regain our rightful position on top of the Southern Conference.
